Interested in Iowa archaeology? The Cherokee County Conservation Board is partnering with the Sanford Museum to provide you with a unique opportunity to paddle the Little Sioux River with an archaeologist on Saturday, July 11th!
Enjoy this leisurely float down the Little Sioux River while stopping at various sandbars along the way. Guest Archaeologist and previous Archaeologist at the Sanford Museum, Megan Stroh Messerole, will be sharing her expertise with us about local history and helping identify potential artifacts that we may find along the way.
The paddle will begin at 10:00am at Mill Creek Bridge and end at Wescott Park. The trip will take around 2-2.5 hours, so plan on bringing a lunch or various snack items. It is recommended that participants dress for the weather and wear sunscreen and bug spray.
Participants will need to bring their own canoe or kayak to the event. The event is free, but registration is required by July 7th at Noon. The paddle is open to everyone, but children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
If river levels are too low to float, then we’ll do a river walk instead, looking at items found on sandbars near Mill Creek Access.
Be sure to join the Sanford Museum on Friday evening, July 10th, for various archaeological activities with Megan and the Sanford Museum's Archaeologist Mark Anderson.
